    SOS LISBON - FIRST STEPS

In this experience, the student will learn the essentials for finding their way around Lisbon on their own and “understanding” the city like a local, as well as identifying the main “hotspots” for orientation. At the same time, they will be given the key words, phrases and grammatical explanations essential for solving the most varied and common interaction situations in Lisbon, namely, how to address strangers on the street to ask for information or simple directions (for example, to find out where the nearest pharmacy is or how to get to a certain address). This course is not intended to compete with the unbeatable practicality of GPS, but rather to take the student out of the status of “ordinary tourist” and give them the tools for basic ‘street communication’ in Lisbon. The aim of this experience is to provide the student with the minimum language skills to enable them to interact verbally with the locals, i.e., to understand and be understood (!!), in as many situations as possible (on the street, in shops, on transport, etc.). Note that the program was prepared to teach not just what to say, but how to say it (conversational etiquette, how to address people of different ages, unknown men and women, how to show appreciation, etc.). Mastering the language goes far beyond knowing the words: there are cultural codes, situational contexts, “more correct” words, gestures or intonations that must be taken into account when addressing strangers and that are more cultural than linguistic. In this program, students will learn these key verbal and non-verbal codes for clean, polite basic communication without misinterpretation.

    COFFE SHOPS OF LISBON

Cafés in Portugal are an intrinsic part of the culture of the Portuguese people, not only those who live in the cities, but also the inhabitants of the smallest villages.

For Lisboners in particular, the café is an unshakeable part of their ethos and day-to-day life, whether it's to spend most of their free time there, to relax with friends for a "half hour" on the terrace, to chat a bit and "watch the soccer" or simply to have a quick cup of coffee on the way to work. 'Café' for Lisboners is a general term that covers various types of establishments that have in common the fact that they sell coffee. Lisbon's cafés have a service “etiquette” and knowing exactly what to ask for and how to ask for it in a café is a skill that most foreigners don't have.

This Experience will focus on teaching you to “master the essential language of cafés” in particular, and food establishment in general. You will be taught useful phrases and words to use in commerce in general (similar to the “Shopping in Lisbon” Experience) but with the specificity of vocabulary more geared towards cafés. As well as learning how to make general and common requests in cafés, you will learn some of the “secrets” and particularities of Lisbon's café culture: the ways to order a coffee (there are more than 10 different ways to order a coffee in Lisbon), cordial approach, etiquette, the “technical” name of the different establlishments, the vast food and drink vocabulary, expressions, etc.

During the class we will visit not only one or two of Lisbon's most iconic cafés, but also “more ordinary” cafés, where you will have the opportunity to place your own order with the waiter.

Shopping, Eating, Drinking, Leasure, Coffee Shop

You receive
  1. Practical (bilingual) written guide about the culture of coffee and cafés in Lisbon.

Requirements
  1. Minimum level of vocabulary (A1-A2).

Consider fasting if you choose to take the class in the morning. That way, the experience will begin with breakfast.

Please note that the price of what the student consumes is not included in the price of the course and will be paid on the spot (the student will learn to ask for the bill himself). The student doesn't need to eat anything, at the very least they can simply ask for a bottle of water so that we can sit in the establishment and have part of our lesson there.

    LISBON AND THE RIVER

It is impossible to separate Lisbon from the Tagus River. The Tagus lives in Lisbon, and Lisbon sees and reflects itself in the river. On 28 June 1147, the Tagus became the gateway to Lisbon for a fleet of 164 ships carrying an army of 13,000 crusaders (the Second Crusade) led by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, who conquered Lisbon from the Moors in a siege that lasted almost four months. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, would conquer Lisbon from the Moors in a siege that lasted almost four months. Having played a fundamental role in the Christian reconquest of Lisbon and, later, in the defence of the nation, the Tagus River and its port are closely linked to the city that was born and prospered with it. It is impossible to think of Lisbon without thinking of the waters of the Tagus ‘that take us to the sea’. Many of the caravels and ships that helped write the history of Portugal set sail from the Tagus.

Lisbon is a city that faces the Tagus, with much of its leisure activities taking place precisely in the riverside area of the city. Learning Portuguese on the banks of the Tagus is like letting the language flow into the sea and going wherever the currents take you. Conversations are completely free and can vary in theme, but they will always revolve around the love affair between Lisbon and the Tagus.
